Water Well Drilling Rigs: Crawler vs Wheeled vs Truck-Mounted — How to Pick the Right Chassis

The chassis decides how a drilling rig moves between wells, and that decision drives half the operating cost of a water-well drilling business. Get the chassis wrong and the rig either can't reach the wellhead, can't get off the soft ground at the wellhead, or burns a working day moving between sites. Pick by terrain, transport distance between wells, hole depth, and hole diameter — in that order. The chassis you pick will then point to the right drivetrain: rotary table, mechanical power head or hydraulic top drive.

1. The chassis decision in one minute

Crawler (tracked)High (330 – 440 mm)Slow — drives itself 2 – 3 km/h, usually hauled on a lowboy130 – 1 000 m100 – 400 mmKS series

A contractor drilling farm wells at 130 – 200 m wants a wheeled or truck-mounted rig so the machine drives itself between villages. A company working a 50-well scheme at 300 – 800 m wants a crawler that lives on site. A deep-well specialist chasing 600 – 1 500 m municipal or geothermal contracts wants a truck-mounted rotary table rig that drives itself between provinces.

2. Crawler rigs — the KS series, 130 to 1 000 m

The KS series is the workhorse of the crawler water well line — twelve published models covering 180 m to 1 000 m, plus the 130 m wheeled KS130 for shallow jobs. All crawlers are full-hydraulic top-drive units on a steel-track chassis with outriggers, paired with a rotary head, mud pump and lattice mast. Each model pairs with a Kaishan KSZJ or LGZJ high-pressure compressor for air-feed DTH work or mud circulation.

KS100013 t1 000 m140 – 350 mmCummins 194 kW

Where a crawler earns its keep: soft, muddy or uneven terrain where wheels would sink or a trailer would bottom out. All crawlers carry 30° gradeability and 2.5 km/h tramming speed. The deep-end KS800 and KS1000 use Φ102 / Φ108 / Φ114 mm drill pipe and water-and-air dual working systems, paired with LGZJ-class high-pressure compressors. The downside: a 13-tonne crawler on a lowboy is expensive to relocate, and 2.5 km/h tramming means it can't drive itself between far-apart wells.

3. Wheeled rigs — short moves, shallow wells

The wheeled line covers 130 – 200 m in a fast, road-legal package. Three distinct chassis exist in this range:

  • KS130 (3 t, 130 m, 100 – 219 mm, Changchai 23 kW, 1.45 – 2.5 MPa, 15 – 29 m³/min) — a self-propelled wheeled rig for farm wells and household supply; compact at 4 000 × 1 450 × 2 050 mm and easy to tow with a light truck.
  • KS180A (4.5 t, 180 m, 140 – 254 mm, Quanchai 55 kW) and KS200A (5 t, 200 m, 140 – 254 mm, Quanchai 65 kW, 13 t lifting force) — wheeled rigs with excavator-grade rubber tracks, suitable for rural roads and field access. The patented composite boom, BM6-245 hydraulic motor and 1.5 t auxiliary winch are standard.
  • KS200B (5 t, 200 m, 140 – 254 mm, Yuchai 58 kW) — a three-wheel truck-mounted configuration. Distinct from the KS200A rubber-track unit and from a crawler FY200. Used where the access road is paved and the contractor needs highway speed between sites.

The trade-off is clear: wheeled and FYL rigs sacrifice ground clearance and torque for speed and road access. They are not the answer on soft mud, steep slopes or in heavy rain, but they cut relocation time from a day to an hour.

4. Truck-mounted rigs — 300 to 1 500 m, three drivetrains

For deeper wells and larger diameters, the truck-mounted line splits by drivetrain type. The choice is driven by depth × hole diameter × torque demand:

DrivetrainModelsDepthHole diameterTorqueEngine power
Hydraulic top drive (TEC-K / CDC)TEC-300K, CDC-300K, CDC-400K, CDC-600K, CDC-600JYD, TDC-800K300 – 800 m105 – 505 mm8 500 – 15 500 N·m132 – 165 kW
Mechanical power head (TEC-J / CDC-J)TEC-450J, TEC-600J, TEC-800J, CDC-300J, CDC-450JK, CDC-600JK450 – 800 m90 – 850 mmup to 29 000 N·m144 – 320 kW
Rotary table (TZT / CZC)TZT-450, TZT-800, TZT-1000, TZT-1200, CZC-450, CZC-600, CZC-800, CZC-1200, CZC-1500450 – 1 500 m90 – 2 000 mm32 500 – 35 000 N·m132 – 353 kW

Hydraulic top drive (CDC-600K is the typical reference) is the most flexible: it handles both mud circulation and DTH drilling, smooth torque control, hole diameters up to 505 mm on the high-spec variant, and the rig is a 6×4 truck chassis that drives itself between sites. The right answer when the same contractor switches between shallow water wells and small-diameter DTH work.

Mechanical power head (the TEC-600J is the reference at 600 m with 114 mm pipe / 750 m with 89 mm pipe, 152 kW Weichai, BW1100/6 mud pump, 28 566 N·m torque) gives simple, low-maintenance mechanical drive with high torque at continuous rating. Best when the contractor runs the same rig at the same depth class for years. The CDC-800J takes this up to 800 m with a 320 kW Weichai and 60 t / 11 m tower.

Rotary table (the TZT-450 with a 6×6 truck chassis, 132 kW Weichai, 90 – 1 800 mm hole diameter, CT-1 rotary table at 32 500 – 3 500 N·m, BW600/30 mud pump, 7 forward + 1 reverse gear) is the heavy-duty answer for deep wells and large diameters. The CZC-800 (265 kW, SinoTruck 6×4, 90 – 2 000 mm aperture, 32 t total weight) is the workhorse for 800 m municipal water supply. Above 1 000 m, the rotary table is the only drivetrain in the catalogue, with TZT-1000, TZT-1200, CZC-1200, CZC-1500 covering the deepest wells.

5. Decision tree — answer three questions, get the rig

  1. What is the deepest well on the contract? < 200 m → wheeled (KS wheeled) or small crawler (KS180 / KS260). 200 – 600 m → crawler (KS300B – KS450) or truck-mounted hydraulic top drive (CDC series). 600 – 1 000 m → crawler (KS800 / KS1000) or mechanical power head (CDC-800J). > 1 000 m → rotary table (TZT / CZC).
  2. What is the largest hole diameter? < 300 mm → any of the above. 300 – 500 mm → crawler KS400+ or CDC-600K high-spec. > 500 mm → rotary table only (TZT / CZC reach up to 2 000 mm).
  3. How does the rig move between wells? Same site for months → crawler. Same district, paved roads → wheeled (KS wheeled). Multiple provinces, highway relocations → truck-mounted (any drivetrain).

A worked example: a contractor with 300 mm-diameter municipal wells at 500 m depth, scattered across a province with paved roads. Step 1 says truck-mounted, step 2 says 300 mm is at the edge of the CDC-600K high-spec envelope. The natural pick is a CDC-600K high-spec variant (165 kW Cummins, 15 500 N·m) or — for larger diameter capacity — a rotary table CZC-800 (265 kW, 90 – 2 000 mm aperture).

6. What to bring to a supplier

Bring the target depth, wells-per-month production rate, formation profile (soft / mixed / hard rock, DTH or mud), largest hole diameter, site-access description (road quality, slope, soft-ground risk), and any compressor you already own. The wrong chassis on the right drivetrain still costs you a season.

Tell us your well depth, hole diameter and how the rig will move between sites. We'll line up a crawler, wheeled or truck-mounted candidate from the FY, FYX, FYL, TZT, CZC, TEC and CDC families and send a quote. Request a quote here.
