High-Altitude Drilling: Configuring Rigs and Compressors for Plateau Sites

Above 3000 m, thin air derates engines and compressors — equipment must be configured for altitude, not just delivered.

1. What altitude does to the equipment

At altitude, air density drops: diesel engines lose power, compressors deliver less flow and cooling becomes harder. Components must be cold-climate and high-altitude tested, with flow derating accounted for in the air package (roughly 1% flow loss per 100 m above 500 m).

2. The high-altitude configuration

  • High-altitude derated compressor selection — confirm pressure and flow at site altitude
  • Cold-start kits for plateau winter temperatures
  • High-efficiency cooling packages for reduced air density
  • Crawler rigs with gradeability for mountain access roads
  • LGCY/KSCY/KSZJ/LGZJ families tested from -30°C to +50°C

3. Project reference

Kaishan equipment is supplied to high-altitude and plateau projects across South America (Andes) and Central Asia, with components cold-climate tested for desert, plateau and remote-site conditions.

Frequently asked questions

How much compressor capacity do I lose at 4000 m?

Roughly 1% per 100 m above 500 m — about 35% at 4000 m. Send your site altitude and hammer demand and we size the compressor with the derating built in.

Do rigs need special configuration for altitude?

Engine and cooling packages are configured for altitude; cold-start kits cover plateau winters. We confirm the exact package from your site data.

Need equipment matched to your site?

Send us your hole diameter, depth and conditions — we confirm the configuration within 24 hours.
