Air Compressor Sizing for Water Well Drilling: How to Match a Compressor to Your Rig

The compressor is not an add-on to a drilling rig — it's the heart of the air circuit. Get the match wrong and the rig either burns bits without penetration or idles at half-load all shift. Two numbers drive the entire selection: working pressure (MPa or bar) must equal or slightly exceed the DTH hammer rating, and free air delivery (m³/min) must cover the hammer's rated consumption at that pressure with at least 10 – 15 % margin for leakage and altitude. Once those two are fixed, you choose between diesel two-stage (KSCY), electric (KSDY), deep-well diesel (KSZJ), and high-pressure diesel (LGZJ) depending on hole depth and whether the site has mains power.

1. The two numbers: pressure and flow

Every drilling compressor is defined by a pressure/displacement pair written into the model code — for example a KSZJ-29/23-32/17 delivers 29 m³/min at 2.3 MPa or 32 m³/min at 1.7 MPa on the same engine. The first figure is the high-pressure rating, the second is the higher-flow rating. Pairing the right rating to the hammer is where most mis-sizes happen.

A worked example: the Kaishan KG420B mid-size DTH rig draws 10 – 17 m³/min depending on hammer size (3″ or 4″) at the working pressure. The smallest practical match is a KSCY-310/22 (21 m³/min @ 2.2 MPa); a tight match is a KSCY-650/20-700/17T (18 – 19 m³/min, dual-mode 2.0 / 1.7 MPa) which leaves headroom and lets the engine run at efficient load. A KG520 (15 – 22 m³/min) wants at least the same class of compressor, with the high-flow setting used when running the 4″ hammer.

Two quick rules:

  • Pressure below the hammer rating = the hammer won't cycle. The compressor is the bottleneck.
  • Flow below the hammer rating = penetration drops, the bit runs hot, hole deviation increases. The hammer is the bottleneck.

Always size to the highest pressure and the highest flow the hammer can demand simultaneously, then add 10 – 15 % margin. If you're not sure, send the hammer spec to the supplier and ask for the worst-case pair.

2. The four Kaishan families — what each one is for

Kaishan publishes four mobile compressor families, and they line up by pressure band and drive type, not by displacement:

FamilyDrivePressure bandFlow bandTypical use
KSCYDiesel two-stage0.8 – 2.3 MPa18 – 24 m³/minDTH drilling (KG/KT rigs), quarry blasting, geotechnical
KSDY / PMDYElectric motor0.8 – 2.5 MPa10 – 40 m³/minFixed-power site air, mining with grid power, indoor / tunnel
KSZJDiesel two-stage1.7 – 2.3 MPa18 – 32 m³/minWater well drilling rigs (KS series), dual-mode switching
LGZJDiesel two-stage2.5 – 3.5 MPa30 – 43 m³/minDeep wells, geothermal, very hard rock, dual-mode switching

A quick way to remember which is which: KSCY for surface DTH, KSDY for electric site air, KSZJ for water wells, LGZJ when the well goes deep or the rock goes hard.

For a crawler water well rig like the KS300B (85 kW Yuchai, hole 140 – 325 mm, depth 300 m) or the KS450 (110 kW Yuchai, 140 – 350 mm, depth 450 m), the natural compressor match is a KSZJ — for example the KSZJ-29/23-32/17 (29 m³/min @ 2.3 MPa, 32 m³/min @ 1.7 MPa, 400 HP Yuchai, 4 050 kg) or a KSZJ-18/17A (18 m³/min @ 1.7 MPa) for the smaller KS180 / KS260 class. For the KS800 (153 kW Cummins, depth 800 m, hole 140 – 400 mm) and KS1000 (194 kW Cummins, depth 1000 m, hole 140 – 350 mm), the pressure demand climbs and the right answer is the LGZJ family — the LGZJ-31/25-35/18 (31 m³/min @ 2.5 MPa / 35 m³/min @ 1.8 MPa, dual-mode) is the typical pairing.

3. Diesel or electric — pick by the site, not by preference

Electric drive (KSDY, including the PMDY permanent-magnet variable-frequency models) is the right call when the site has reliable three-phase power, the operator wants lower noise and zero on-site diesel emissions, and the air demand is reasonably steady. The KSDY range covers 10 – 40 m³/min @ 0.8 – 2.5 MPa with motors up to 200+ kW; a KSDY-20/8 delivers 20 m³/min @ 0.8 MPa from a 110 kW motor at 3 115 kg, while a PMDY-40/25 delivers 40 m³/min @ 2.5 MPa for the heaviest electric-drive water-well or DTH support.

Diesel drive (KSCY / KSZJ / LGZJ) is the right call when the rig has to move every week or every month, when the site is off-grid, or when the operator wants one fuel chain across the fleet. All four families share the SKY patented screw air-end rated to 40 bar, three-stage filtration and an intelligent computer controller with remote monitoring. KSCY G2 variants meet National IV emissions for export to markets that require them; K-G2 variants of the LGZJ compressors comply with National II.

4. Dual-mode switching — one compressor, two rigs

The single most useful operational feature on the KSZJ and LGZJ families is dual-mode switching: the same machine delivers a higher-flow / lower-pressure rating for normal drilling and a lower-flow / higher-pressure rating for deep holes or stuck rods. A KSZJ-29/23-32/17 gives the operator 33 m³/min @ 25 bar or 26 m³/min @ 35 bar at the flick of a switch; the LGZJ-31/25-35/18 gives 31 m³/min @ 2.5 MPa or 35 m³/min @ 1.8 MPa.

What this means in practice: a contractor with three water well rigs at different depths (a 200 m, a 500 m and an 800 m) can buy one LGZJ-31/25-35/18 and run all three with the correct pressure/flow pair on each site, instead of buying three compressors. For a fleet operator this is often the difference between a viable and a non-viable equipment package.

5. Sizing checklist

Before you order a compressor, lock these numbers down:

  • Hammer size (3″, 4″, 5″, 6″, 8″) and its rated pressure and flow
  • Maximum hole depth in the campaign
  • Number of drilling rigs the compressor will feed (one or several)
  • Site power: grid or generator, voltage, phase
  • Altitude above sea level (subtract roughly 1 % flow per 100 m above 500 m)
  • Ambient temperature — both KSCY and KSZJ/LGZJ are tested from −30 °C to +50 °C, but very high ambient temperatures reduce effective flow
  • Emission requirements at the destination country

Bring those answers to the supplier and you can usually walk out with two matching compressor candidates the same day.
