Top Hammer vs DTH Drilling: How to Pick the Right Method
Before you compare rigs, compare the method. Top hammer and down-the-hole (DTH) drilling make holes in fundamentally different ways, and choosing the wrong one costs more than choosing the wrong model inside the right method. The decision turns on three numbers — hole diameter, hole depth and rock hardness — plus one operational question: where does the drilling air come from.
1. The two methods in one minute
Top hammer puts the percussion hammer on the mast, outside the hole. A hydraulic hammer (the HC95LJQ at 24 kW on the KL510, or the HC150/HC160 at 21/27 kW on the KL511) strikes the top of the drill string, and the shock wave travels down the rods to the bit. Because the energy travels through the string, the method works best where the string is short and stiff: small diameters and shallow-to-medium depths.
DTH puts the hammer behind the bit, inside the hole. The piston strikes the bit directly and the energy does not travel through the rods, so penetration stays strong as the hole gets deeper. That is why DTH owns the territory beyond 25 m and above 130 mm.
| Top hammer | DTH | |
|---|---|---|
| Hammer position | On the mast, outside the hole | Behind the bit, in the hole |
| Energy path | Through the drill string | Direct to the bit |
| Sweet-spot diameter | 64-127 mm | 76-311 mm |
| Sweet-spot depth | Up to ~25 m | 25 m and deeper |
| Best rock | Medium-hard, uniform | Hard, abrasive, fractured |
| Kaishan line | KL510, KL511 | KG, KT, KZ, ZT series + K/L/M hammers |
2. Three numbers decide the method
Hole diameter. Below 127 mm at bench scale, top hammer is competitive; above 130 mm, DTH is mandatory. The Kaishan catalogue reflects this cleanly: the KL511 drills 76-127 mm (or 64-115 mm with the smaller hammer), while the DTH rigs start at 90 mm and run to 254 mm production holes on the KT30 with an 8″ hammer.
Hole depth. Top hammer energy decays with string length, so the method has a practical ceiling around 25 m — exactly the economical bench depth of the KL511. DTH holds penetration as depth grows: the same KG rigs that drill 25 m benches economically are matched by DTH hammers rated for the task.
Rock hardness. In hard, abrasive or fractured formations, DTH hammers keep drilling where top hammer strings chatter and lose energy at the joints. In medium-hard, uniform rock — typical quarry benches — a top hammer rig like the KL511 delivers more holes per shift at 64-115 mm.
3. Integrated vs split — the operational side of the choice
The second decision is where the drilling air comes from, and it interacts with the method:
- Integrated rigs (KT5C, KT9C, KT30, KZ5, KZ9, and the top-hammer KL511) carry the screw compressor onboard. One engine, one machine, one operator. The KL511 is fully self-contained for production blasting: Cummins QSC8.3 (194 kW) plus an onboard Kaishan screw compressor at 9.7 m³/min @ 10 bar.
- Split rigs (KG420B, KG520, KG940A and the rest of the KG line) take drilling air from a separate compressor — a KSCY, KSZJ or LGZJ mobile unit — matched to the hammer: 10-17 m³/min for the KG420B, 15-22 m³/min for the KG520.
A single-rig quarry that moves weekly is better served by an integrated machine. A multi-rig mine with a centralised compressor fleet is better served by split rigs, because one compressor can feed several rigs and be right-sized to the hole.
4. Matching the method to the rig — quick map
| If your holes are… | Pick | Reference model |
|---|---|---|
| 64-127 mm, high frequency, medium-hard rock | Top hammer, integrated | KL510 / KL511 |
| 90-130 mm, 25 m benches, split air system | DTH, split | KG420B, KG520 |
| 76-190 mm, quarry and slope, move often | DTH, integrated | KT5C, KT9C |
| 90-165 mm, small mines, frequent relocation | DTH, compact integrated | KZ5, KZ9 |
| 195-254 mm, heavy production blasting | DTH, heavy integrated | KT30 |
| 140-190 mm, 36 m, high automation | DTH, smart top-end | KT60i |
5. What the switch costs
Top hammer and DTH carry different cost profiles. Top hammer puts the wear on the drill string — rods, shanks and bits turn over faster, but the hammer itself stays outside the hole. DTH puts the wear on the hammer and bit inside the hole — the consumable is expensive, but penetration stays strong in rock that would stall a top hammer. The practical rule: if the rock will not let a top hammer reach rate, the higher DTH consumable cost is cheaper than the lost shift.
6. The checklist
- Hole diameter range for the campaign
- Average and maximum bench depth
- Rock hardness class and whether the formation is uniform or fractured
- Whether a separate compressor fleet already exists on site
- Transport and site-access limits (weight class matters: KL511 at 17.5 t, KT30 at 34 t)
Answer those five and the method — and then the rig — mostly picks itself.
